An era of competition, innovation and fear With the devastation of World War II barely over, the world was faced with a new, potentially even more cataclysmic threat - the Cold War. Even though not as many shots were fired, and not as many lives tragically lost, the constant threat of total nuclear annihilation was enough to leave the world living in fear for decades. These aircraft were capable of incredible things and the boffins continued to come up with ever-more ingenious machines as the USA and the Soviet Union in particular were determined to out-do one another.
