Setting:
The year is 1791 and France continues its slide into a state of anarchy and terror. As the people riot in the bloodstained streets, the country's leaders continue to quarrel and fight in their attempts to seize control.
Meanwhile, following an attempt to flee the country, the unpopular King Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette, are being held under lock and key in the Bastille Fortress.
In an attempt to restore some normality to the couple's lives, Cardinal Richelieu decides to hold a masked ball to celebrate the King s 40th birthday, albeit with just the jail's four residents, and their single visitors, in attendance. However, just an hour before the party starts, Richelieu discovers the King's lifeless, poisoned body, lying slumped across his dressing room table. Confusion replaces shock, however, when a second 'living and breathing' Louis appears and proclaims himself as the King, and the corpse an imposter. Richelieu must enlist the help of those attending the ball if he is to catch the killer and solve the mystery, before dawn breaks on a country set to implode.
