The Royal Air Force was formed during the First World War in 1918, and is the oldest air force in the world. Since it was formed the RAF have played a significant role in British military history. Its role in The Battle of Britain in 1940 is the RAF's most famous triumph, and was one of the first major military campaigns fought entirely by air forces.
To mark the centenary of The RAF and honour their sacrifice in protecting Great Britain's skies, The Royal Mint has issued a 2018 commemorative £2 coin.
The reverse features the design by Rhys Morgan of the Badge of the RAF. The Badge features an eagle flying in front of a circle with the Imperial Crown at the top. The edge inscription is the official RAF motto 'PER ARDUA AD ASTRA', which is Latin for 'Through adversity to the stars'.
The obverse features Jody Clark's portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
